Such has been the success of the new social running group in Hethersett that it is set to continue beyond its initial 10 week run.
Initially the group was set-up jointly by Active Norfolk and Hethersett and Melton Sports Association to encourage more people to take up the sport and also coach them to take part in the two mile village funrun which is part of the annual Hethersett Open weekend.
For 10 weeks the group has been coached by Norfolk Olympiad Paul Evans from Active Norfolk and athletics coach Ron Marsh. Up to 40 runners have been taking part and it has been decided to continue.
“The group has been really successful, attracting people of all ages and abilities. Paul and Ron have done a wonderful job in helping us all to improve. A number of our runners took part in the run the square event and recorded times they could only have dreamed of a few weeks ago. Such has been the enthusiasm that we will be continuing at Hethersett Junior School on Thursday evenings from 7 until 8 p.m under the leadership of Hethersett athlete Maria Alborough,” said chair of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association Peter Steward.
The group would welcome any new runners who wish to join them. Just turn up at the school on a Thursday evening.

A fledgling Hethersett sports club has won a prestigious regional award – just six months after it was set-up.
The Hethersett Social Running Group was launched in April as a partnership between Active Norfolk and Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association.
Throughout the summer the group, which caters for all ages, has been holding regular Thursday night sessions at Hethersett Junior School, attracting up to 40 people a time. This has been recognised with the club being named Run England Eastern Region Group of the Year.
The group will officially be honoured and recognised at a presentation evening at Chelmsford Football Club early in December.
The group was initially coached for 10 weeks by Norfolk Olympiad Paul Evans and local athletics coach Ron Marsh. Following this Maria Alborough took over the coaching duties.
The club’s final Thursday night session will be this week (October 4th) when members will round off their season with a two mile run round Hethersett starting from the Junior School at 6 p.m. It is possible that the group will continue to meet once a month on Sunday mornings throughout the winter.
Next Spring it is planned to launch a new beginners’ group, again with the backing of Active Norfolk. This will then swell the existing group after an initial 10 week course.
“It was great to be involved with the Hethersett beginners group and watch the group grow in terms of numbers and ability, anything that brings communities together is a great thing and the running group certainly did that,” Paul Evans said.
“We are hoping that the success of the running club will help us to launch a number of other sporting clubs in Hethersett and the Meltons supporting a number of sports from tennis to rounders,” said chair of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association Peter Steward.

A new athletics’ academy for youngsters aged from eight to 12 is being set-up in Hethersett following the success of a social running group.
Qualified coach Ron Marsh, who lives at Quidenham, is looking to set-up the new academy to complement one already in existence in East Harling.
“After starting an academy in Harlling I wanted to continue with the idea and Hethersett seemed the ideal place because of its community spirit and the success of the social running club,” he said.
The social running club began as a partnership between Active Norfolk and Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association in April with Ron as one of the coaches. It has recently been named Run England Eastern Region Club of the Year.
It is likely that the academy will meet weekly at a time and day still to be set.
“We have too many youngsters aged between eight and 12 who take up athletics for a short time and then stop because they have to travel too far and there is nothing for them locally. I am looking at youngsters of all abilities. My target will be to improve them. Although it’s aimed mainly at 8 to 12 year olds I won’t be turning anybody away, particularly if parents want to join in, Ron added.
The academy will concentrate on the letters A to D – Ability, Balance, Co-Ordination and Discipline and last for a maximum of one and a half hours.
Anybody interested in joining the academy or finding out more about it can contact Ron Marsh on 01953 888817 or e-mail him at [email protected]
